Silver Lace Wedding Headpiece

Today's Idea & Inspiration is a Silver Lace Wedding Head Piece. We have a plethora of components to chose from here at Ben Franklin. From rhinestone ribbons to adhesive pearl designs, making a unique headpiece for a special occasion couldn't be easier.

Supplies:

• Silver Sparkle Lace (30132554)
• 7/8" White Satin Ribbon (30116684)
• 1.5" Rhinestone Ribbon (30137942)
• Adhesive of choice
• Sewing thread to match
• Needle
• Scissors

Instructions:

1. Measure Silver Sparkle Lace to fit head and add 6 inches, cut
2. Cut around lace design on one side, fold over straight side to desired width
3. Make Ribbon Roses using Silver Sparkle Lace
4. Adhere Rhinestone Ribbon to Silver Sparkle Lace (double stick tape was used for this)
5. Adhere Ribbon Roses to Silver Sparkle Lace (hot glue was used for this)
6. Sew Satin Ribbon to ends of Silver Sparkle Lace
7. Trim Silver Sparkle Lace ends

Glitzy Grad Lei

Got a graduate who's a little glitzy? Maybe someone a tad glamorous? They might like my newest take on the braided lei, the Glitzy Grad Lei.

For this lei you only need a few supplies. The lei pictured here used 1/2" rhinestone ribbon, blue 3/8" picot ribbon, white 3/8" picot ribbon, and scissors. My lei ended up only using about 5 yards of each ribbon. If you already know how to make a braided ribbon lei you don't really need to read the rest of this blog entry. Just make this lei the same but with the addition of the rhinestone ribbon. For those of you who may need a braided ribbon lei refresher, read on.

You start this lei by making a slip knot about 12" into your piece of ribbon. A slip knot is made by making a loop and then using the same ribbon, pulling another loop through your first loop. I tried to take a picture of this process (see above) and hopefully this will make the last sentence more understandable.

Now, with both the white and the rhinestone ribbon, make a loop leaving about a 12" long tail of the white ribbon in the back. As you can see, the rhinestone ribbon should be on the inside of the loop. Insert this loop into the loop you made on the blue piece of ribbon.

Then, pull the long piece of the blue ribbon, this is the one that should be facing you, tight until you have the blue ribbon cinched around the white/rhinestone.

Now make a loop with the blue ribbon and insert that loop into the white loop. Pull the white loop tight. All this talk about loops is making me a little loopy.

Anyone know how to do the loop-de-loop? Continue inserting blue loop into white, and white loop into blue until you have a long enough braid for your lei.

To finish, cut your blue and white ribbons leaving 12" tails. The rhinestone ribbon can be cut shorter. Then, with the last white loop made, insert the end of the blue ribbon into the white loop and pull the white loop tight.

Take your two long tails at each end of the lei and tie them together into a double knot.

 

Then tie your lei ends together and you're done! Your finished lei should look just like this one. Who's ready to get their glitz on?

Never Forget the Finger Lei

My blog today is brought to you on behalf of that almost forgotten lei making technique, the finger crochet. Our finger lei don't want to be forgotten, they want me to remind you that they're not just for grade school graduations (although they are great for those too) but they can be classy and beautiful lei. We submit two examples as proof of their fantastic-ness.

This first exhibit I'd like to call the Fizzy Grape Soda or the Iced Orchid lei. I haven't quite decided on the name yet. This lei is made using a 3/8" purple satin and silver edged organza ribbon along with a 3/16" white double-faced satin picot ribbon. It gave me some warm fizzy feelings just making it.

This second exhibit is the Castle High School version the previous lei. I think I'll call it Fizzy Knights. I made this lei using a 3/8" wine satin-edged organza ribbon and a 1/8" white and gold satin ribbon. One of the best things about this lei is that it only took about 30 minutes for me to make from start to finish. Pretty uplifting huh?

I have to admit, I was also taking finger lei for granted until this weekend when I was asked to take part in the Market City store's "Let Celebrate" party. Thanks to Katie, Holly, Matz, and the whole Market City crew, I was reminded how much fun finger lei making can be. So it's because of  them and all those people who stopped by to have some fun with me that these wonderful lei will not be forgotten.

Halloween Candles with Black Sparkle Lace

Today's Idea & Inspiration is inspired by our new 6 inch Sparkle Lace. Here it was used to enhance candles for a Halloween theme table setting.

Supplies:

• 6" Black Sparkle Lace (30132555)
• 3"x6" White Pillar Candle (30060780)
• 6"x6" White Pillar Candle (30060768)
• 10" White Taper Candle (30060744)
• Candlestick (30129586)
• 3/8" Halloween Ribbon (30133900)
• 7/8" Black Satin Edge Ribbon (30116795)
• 7/8" Orange Satin Edge Ribbon (30116772)
• 7/8" Orange Satin Ribbon (30116688)
• 1/8" Orange Satin Ribbon (30090693)
• Box Dish Round (30107253)
• 3/16" Dbl Stick Tape (30013283)
• Fabric Scissors of choice

Instructions for Pillar Candles: 

1. Cut Black Sparkle Lace to wrap around candles. Adhere to the candle with doublestick tape.
2. Cut 2' of Black Satin Edge Ribbon, Orange Satin Edge Ribbon, and 2 types of Halloween Ribbon
3. Adhere 1 type Halloween Ribbon to middle of each of the Black & Orange Satin Edge Ribbons.
4. Tie bow around Black Sparkle Lace on each candle.
5. Cut Black Sparkle Lace to fit around Box Dish Round, adhere using doublestick tape.
6. Cut 2 ~ 1/8" Orange Satin Ribbon to fit around Box Dish Round. Adhere to top & bottom edge of Black Sparkle Lace on Box Dish Round.

Instructions for Black Sparkle Lace Pumpkin Candle:

1. Cut 4 ~ 16" lengths of the Black Sparkle Lace. Cut each length in half = 8 ~ 3"x16" lengths.
2. Adhere doublestick tape to each end of each 3"x16" Black Sparkle Lace lengths (same side of lace).
3. Adhere 1 edge of 1st length of Black Sparkle Lace to collar of candle stick.
4. Set candle stick on middle of Black Sparkle Lace length.
5. Bring Black Sparkle Lace up to opposite edge of candlestick, adhere. 
6. Continue adhering each piece of Black Sparkle Lace to candlestick per steps 3-5, working around candlestick to form "pumpkin".
7. Freehand cut 2 leaves from Black Sparkle Lace.
8. Doublestick tape 1/8" Orange Satin Ribbon to edges of leaves.
9. Gather 7/8" Orange Satin Ribbon on to doublestick tape for the collar of the candlestick. Adhere.
10. Tie 3 ~ 1/8" Orange Satin Ribbon to taper candlle.
